Buzzell Senior Center: Volunteer Opportunities

A key part of the Elder Service Department is our Buzzell Senior Center. The center has an environment that is not only inviting, but also safe and enjoyable for elderly residents to be able to communicate with their peers and participate in many daily classes and activities. There are approximately 1,300 elder visits a month for participation in Senior Center programs.

The Senior Center plays an active role in matching people interested in volunteer work, balancing talents and real community needs. Below is a partial list of some activities where our seniors volunteer.

  • Event Organization, Event MC. Volunteers- organizes and run large and small events, from social gatherings, shows, fairs and bingo.
  • Visitor /outreach. Seniors who are home-bound appreciate and sometimes depend on contact with the outside world. Some help by making phone calls to chat with isolated seniors, and to make sure they are all right. Others visit. We are further establishing our Telephone Reassurance Program. A dedicated volunteer calls several elders either daily or weekly depending on need. Currently, this is 30-45 calls a week. Due to the success of the program, more elders will be entering this program next year.

  • Instructors. Many of our classes are lead by volunteer instructors that dedicate their time and energy.
  • Medical escorts.
  • Kitchen service - at the Senior Center, where volunteers create a congenial coffee-shop atmosphere. Coffee is always available, and Dunkin Donuts donates donuts. Sometimes seniors bring in home-cooking - quite a treat!
  • Shopping Assistance. Shopping assistance is available for the weekly purchase of food and medical prescriptions for individuals who are unable to shop due to illness or disability. The shopper reviews the list, purchases the items with the senior's money, and delivers it.
  • Talented people contribute their skills toward decorating the center with seasonal displays.
  • Organizing - Memorial Day Parade - The Department of Elderly Services was represented in the town's Memorial Day Parade. Over 50 Elders participated. They built a float showing a globe with flags to represent all the many veterans that were active at time of war.
  • Coordinator for annual talent show - in July we had a talent show at our cookout. The theme of this show was also "Salute to Our Veterans". It was entertaining and heartwarming.

(April 2003 we had our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon for our over 130 dedicated volunteers. Senator Bruce Tarr was our guest speaker for the occasion. He also served us a wonderful meal from Uptown Deli. We also had Representative James Miceli personally give each volunteer a Citation from the House of Representatives for volunteer services to the Town of Wilmington. The department awarded Evelyn Kaminski the "Outstanding Volunteer Award" for all her time and support as an Elderly Commissioner. She served 12 years as a commissioner and this April retired from her position.)
