Buzzell Senior Center: Special Services

A key part of the Elder Service Department is our Buzzell Senior Center. The center has an environment that is
not only inviting, but also safe and enjoyable for elderly residents to be able to communicate with
their peers and participate in many daily classes and activities.
There are approximately 1,300 elder visits a month for participation in Senior Center programs.

Legal Service
Free legal monthly consultations to elders in need.

Income Tax Service
February, March and April of every year we are able to
offer "Free Tax Assistance" through the IRS, VISTA Program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).

Senior Property Tax Work Program
This program enables elders 60 years and older, with low to moderate income the
opportunity to work off a portion of their property tax by working part-time for the Town.
These positions can be found in the various school and municipal departments.

Eligible candidates will meet the following qualifications:

60 years of age or older
-
Homeowner or current spouse
Resident of Wilmington
-
Occupy the property for which taxes are paid
-
Limited financial resources
APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS:
Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Department Head upon referral.

Fuel Assistance Program
This program enables Wilmington elders 60 years and older to apply for fuel assistance within
their own town. The director arranges personal interviews either in the office or at the elder's home.
This program provides eligible elders the financial assistance with their heating costs.

Hairdresser
A hairstylist is available bi-monthly for appointments at the Senior Center.
|

S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Information Needs of Elders)
A certified health benefits counselor who provides information, counseling and assistance regarding
health insurance and health benefit options.
This monthly service is free of charge or obligation, to elders and their families.

Telephone Reassurance Program
This program provides a call to elders that may be homebound, very isolated, difficulty
in dealing with loss and just need some outreach.
These calls are made daily, bi-weekly, and/or weekly, as needed.

Nutrition Class
This group meets bi-monthly and is lead by a volunteer retired nurse.
They discuss importance of nutrition, low cholesterol diets, fat free diets just to name a few.

Library Service for Shut-Ins
Library Homebound Deliver Service is available for shut-ins.
The Friends of the Library offer a homebound delivery service to people who are unable to travel
to the library. People who are temporarily or permanently unable to get out. Reasons could be a
disability or health problem. Contact Linda Pavluk at 978-658-2967 if you are interested.
There is also a need for people who could drive these books to the homebound. If you feel you could help please
