Buzzell Senior Center: Health Services
|
|
| |
| |
A key part of the Elder Service Department is our Buzzell Senior Center. The center has an environment that is
not only inviting, but also safe and enjoyable for elderly residents to be able to communicate with
their peers and participate in many daily classes and activities.
There are approximately 1,300 elder visits a month for participation in Senior Center programs.

Nurse
The Town Nurse - Ann Fitzgerald - visits the Senior Center weekly (Thursday 1:30 - 3:00PM)
to provide blood pressure clinics, B-12 shots, diabetic screenings, and monthly cholesterol
screenings. For seniors unable to make it to the Senior Center due to health ailments, she
makes home visits. The Town Nurse also provides yearly flu shots at the Senior Center, Deming
Way Senior Housing and (for the house-bound) at their home.
Also this year, the Town Nurse (Ann Fitzgerald) along with Susan Rowe, RN, provided a diabetic
awareness workshop and support group. This included weekly meetings, nutrition planning, and weekly
diabetic screenings. On their last meeting the group was able to work together in making a meal
in the senior center kitchen for all of them to share. The program was a wonderful success and
several of the elders in that group still enjoy getting together to discuss new recipes,
count calories, and support one another.

Health Events
Health events are scheduled through out the year. These are flu shots, assorted screenings,
and informative talks about specific health issues, and a senior health fair, where seniors can
find out about health issues and about support services geared to them.
The Department of Elderly Services had its sixth annual Senior Health Fair in October.
It is sponsored annually by the Board of Health and the Department of Elderly Services. There was
screening on blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, bone density and information on nutrition,
osteoporosis, skin care, and diabetes. The fair was coordinated and pulled off by Terri Marciello
and Ann Fitzgerald, Town Nurse assisted by two volunteer nurses: Susan Rowe and Doreen Crowe. Also
at the Senior Health Fair were representatives from the Wilmington Fire and Police Departments,
Minuteman Senior Home Care, Wilmington Family Counseling, Home Instead Corp, and Winchester Hospital
Lifeline Program. The response was wonderful and many found it to be very informative.

Medical Equipment Lending Program
Due to donations of unused equipment by residents, we are able to provide certain equipment on
a temporary basis as they are needed. Elders and their families may borrow needed equipment in order
to stay home safely, while curbing the cost of such items.
We have wheel chairs, walkers, canes, bath chairs, benches and commodes.
